Władysław Skoczylas

Available
98 x 67,5 cm Watercolor on heavy paper mounted on cardboard
Władysław Skoczylas's work depicts a street scene in the Jewish quarter of a city. In the foreground, merchants stand in front of their shops. The buildings are distinguished by architectures with angular, irregular forms that seem to be in motion.

The composition is organized around a central vertical axis marked by an external staircase that helps balance the composition. The buildings are arranged in successive planes, creating an effect of depth. The oblique lines of the roofs and facades create a slight visual tension. Two other characters painted in black are placed in the center of the composition, in the alley. Finally, the building at the back of the composition creates a luminous contrast with the dark buildings of the second plane, which helps create depth in this work.

The chromatic palette favors light and harmonious tones, notably with ochre and beige that unify the entire scene and reinforce the coherence of the volumes. The sky in this work is marked by dark tones, notably with dark blue and ochre beige, reinforced by a slightly veiled light.
